Re-establishing the connection

Has it ever occurred to us, when the religious teachings that we listened is just a sound wave that pass through the ears?

Has it ever occurred to us, when the Quranic verses that were recited upon us, doesn’t cause our hearts to tremble?

Has it ever occurred to us, when we are given a reminder, it doesn’t hit hard on the heart like it did before?

Brothers and sisters, do know that these are the symptoms of arrogance inside the heart. So hidden it is, that only Allah the all-knowing and the one with the diseased heart can know if it exists.

Allah s.w.t says in the Quran:

 ‘Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient (16). Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand (17).

It might be, that we forget to refresh our faith that we feel every ayah of reminder is just a routine. And oh how time flies, with each passing routine, we do not realize how our hearts have become desensitized. Without us realizing, each time we learn the same ayat, it doesn’t make much of an impact like it did the first time. Our hearts have become frozen, like it has been struck the blow of icy cold winter. Nauzubillah. May Allah s.w.t protect us all from this disease of the heart.

Is there any way to soften the hardened hearts? Indeed there is. As believers, never give up on the mercy of Allah Ar-Rahman. See how the ayat goes? After telling how hearts could have hardened, Allah tells His slaves that He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. What does that mean anyway? It means, He can easily make a dead heart alive again. How great Allah’s love to His slaves. It is true then, a saying that goes, love can thaw a frozen heart.

However, one doesn’t get a fresh new heart just like that. It comes with a price, you know. As stated in the Quran;

 “For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron”

Therefore, brothers and sisters, with the approaching Ramadhan, it is high time that we change the condition of our hearts. Let us all re-establish our connection with Allah, so that we are showered with His blessings and love. This is the time that we refresh our faith, and to be overwhelmed again by Allah’s words. Maybe we have been too busy perfecting our dunya that we forget, our true destination lies far ahead. Reflect ourselves more often. The deeper we know of this deen, the humbler we should become. Let us engage ourselves more in everyday zikr. In that way, every remembrance is not just a routine.

More importantly, ask ourselves, has the time not come for us who believed, that our hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah?
